London's youngest art collector

When 10 year old Shay heard he was going to the N22 Open Studios at the Chocolate Factory in Wood Green, he had just one question. “Can I buy a sculpture with my pocket money?” When it came to it, Shay was tempted by a print called ‘Pickle Brain’ by Matthew Green.

Matthew Green said “At the heart of all of my work is an enormous sense of fun. I create worlds and moments where fantasy can meet the most mundane; from a voyeuristic zebra who resides in an old wooden shed to a glamorous blue tit dining for one.”

Matthews illustrations clearly struck a cord with Shay.

Manoj Ambasna from N22 Open Studios said: “it was fantastic to see such a young person keen to own an original art work by one of our artists. In all over 7,000 people attended the Open Studios this year. This was more people than last year – and initial indications are that sales are up for most of the artists too.

This year N22Open Studios support local charity the Harington Scheme. Through a combination of a drinks reception hosted by TV gardener Joe Swift, an auction and a raffle nearly £5,000 was raised for this education charity.

The next Open Studio event takes place on 8-10 November 2013.

ABOUT US

The Chocolate Factories in Wood Green, London N22, are a landmark development and hub of excellence for the creative industries in the UK.

The project started in 1996 when Collage Arts, an arts development agency, moved into the Chocolate Factory on Clarendon Road and converted several derelict floors of the factory into artist studios.

What followed was a high demand for creative space and in 2002, Collage Arts renovated Chocolate Factory 2 on Coburg Road, next door.
